2021 saw considerable changes in the film industry. The likes of Netflix and Disney+ took over, movies that had been waiting since the pandemic’s delays finally hit the big screen, and we celebrated the success of our favourite films in award ceremonies like never before. To commemorate a fantastic year in film, we’re taking a look back at the past year in movies.
We’ll be discussing the films that won the critics hearts, earning them the most significant awards in the industry and why they deserved these prizes. Additionally, we will look into the domination of streaming platforms and their effect on the film industry. Finally, if you’re lucky enough to have any cine film reels, we will explain how Cine2DVD can help you transfer the cine film to DVD so you can future proof your memories.
The Highest Grossing Names
When we look back at the most popular movies, one of the first things we need to explore is the money that each film made at the box office. Looking at the box office lists for the highest-grossing movies is the first step to finding out the most popular films of the past year. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has taken over our screens in recent years, and 2021 was no different. They stole the show this year and had four movies in the top ten worldwide box office – leading with Spider-Man No Way Home at number six, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage at number seven, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at number nine, and Eternals at number ten. According to the worldwide box office, the highest-grossing movie of 2021 was The Battle at Lake Changjin – a Chinese film that was actually China’s most expensive movie ever made. Good job, it paid off upon its release!
Please note, these results are accurate as of December 2021.
The Domination of Streaming Platforms
Of course, 2021 saw the rise of streaming platforms, which showed us that that industry is not slowing down anytime soon. They continued to provide us with our favourite movies and TV shows, from Hollywood’s classics to their original films. Although primarily great and very entertaining, their original films have caused slight controversy in the film industry. There have been questions as to whether the rise and domination of streaming platforms and their original content is the beginning of the end of cinema. Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV Plus originals aren’t shown at the cinema and instead go straight to their streaming platforms.
If you’re a lover of the silver screen and still have hold of some cine film, we would love to help you protect and future proof them. Here at Cine2DVD, we adore the cinema and want to ensure that no part of it is lost. That is why we specialise in cine film transfer – so you can keep hold of the memories stored on your reels for longer by keeping them in DVD format.
2021 in Awards
As mentioned, 2021 saw the comeback of award ceremonies, and whilst restrictions were still in place at some of these events, that didn’t stop Hollywood’s finest from shining down the red carpet as if no time had passed since the last. Of course, the most prestigious of the move awards is The Academy Awards, better known as The Oscars – an event that took place on Sunday the 25th of April 2021. They celebrated the very best of film from January 2020 to February 2021, meaning that we’ll get to find out the success of this year’s movies in the eyes of the critics at next years’ ceremony. The nominations for this event will take place on the 8th of February 2022.
The 2021 event honoured Chloé Zhao with the award for Best Director for her work on Nomadland, which won two additional awards – including Best Picture – making it the most successful movie at the 93rd Academy Awards.
What Does the Future Hold?
It’s difficult to say what the future of film looks like, as the industry constantly changes and advances with new technologies. For example, this year saw the release of the iPhone 13, which has filmmaking software and a movie-quality camera as standard. So does this mean the future of filmmaking lies in our smartphones?
Regarding cinema releases in 2022, the line-up is already looking exciting, and we can’t wait for our cinema visits in the new year. Marvel fans will be pleased as several 2022 releases are part of the MCU, and horror fans will be glad to see that the likes of Scream and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are making a comeback.
Don’t forget, as enticing as streaming services are; it’s important to support your local theatre and see as many movies as you can on the big screen. Let’s help keep cinema alive.
Transferring Your Cine Film to DVD
As mentioned, we are huge fans of all things cinema and want to experience the beauty of the big screen for years to come. So, if you have old cinema reels lying around, choose to future-proof and protect your memories by letting us transfer them to a DVD format. This is an excellent idea for ensuring they last longer and don’t become ruined as time goes on.
